Good organizations consider their presence in the news media and take steps to try to ensure it's a good one. A big part of this comes from training their key people, both staff and volunteers, to speak to the media.
My entire career I have worked in or with the news media. Although technology has changed the media business drastically, reporters are still after the same information and the same rules of engagement apply. Good companies take their media presence seriously and it shows. The formula they use is pretty simple, but effective.
Media training sessions normally work with key Board and staff members, give them the background to working with the media and then provide them with the hands on experience they need to be ready for that call from a reporter. Sessions can involve from just one to a number of people and can cover a half or a full day. Mock taped interviews with participants can be done and then a critique is given to get them prepared. I
can also come to your city to save you on travel expenses and time for
your volunteers and staff.
Due to the number of changes that have taken place within the media, it can be argued that there's never been a better time than now to get your message across.
